1. How does someone get summoned for jury duty service?

The pool from which our potential jurors are chosen is now a master list provided to us from the state of Georgia’s council of superior court clerks. This master list is comprised primarily of Richmond County’s voter registration citizens and all of Richmond County’s citizens registered with the department of driver’s services. Jurors must be randomly selected from this master list. If you are a voter registered in Richmond County, have a driver’s license or ID card, you may be summoned at any time.

2. Who can be excused from jury duty?

You are entitled to be exempted from jury duty if you:
- Are 70 years of age or older and you have submitted a signed request asking to be permanently exempt (located on the reverse side of your summons)
- Have a permanent physical/mental medical disability and you have submitted a signed medical excuse from your physician to jury services (located on the reverse side of your summons)

3. Who can be deferred/excused from jury service?

If you are seeking a deferral/excusal from your jury service, please review the affidavit below. Only those jurors who complete the required documents and return the deferral/excusal request no later than five days prior to their service date will be accepted. 4. What type of cases may require juries?

There are two types of cases, criminal (felony and misdemeanor) and civil.
A criminal case results when a person is accused of committing a crime. Jurors must decide whether the person charged is guilty or not guilty. The accused person is presumed innocent, and the state must prove guilty “beyond a reasonable doubt”
A civil case results from a disagreement or dispute between two or more parties. Jurors must answer questions of disputed facts based upon the testimony and evidence admitted by the judge. Click here.

5. Can i bring my children with me?

The courthouse does not have childcare facilities and children are not allowed in the courtroom. Jurors should make previous arrangements of childcare before reporting for jury duty.

6. Will i be paid for being a juror?

Jurors are compensated $25.00 per day when checked into jury services. A check, along with a work excuse, will be mailed to you by the clerk of superior court’s office. Please be sure to update your address with jury services if you have recently moved.

7. What should i wear to jury duty?

Appropriate dress is required. Women are to wear dresses or dress pants. Men are to wear long pants. No shorts or tank tops allowed.

8. What happens to jurors who don’t report when their summons number is called for jury service?

Delinquent jurors may be charged for being in contempt of court, which could involve being sentenced to time in jail and/or a fine. If a trial has to be cancelled because not enough jurors reported, it costs the county thousands of dollars to reschedule the case for another date.

9. What if i lost my summons?

Please contact jury services as soon as possible. Someone will give you all the information you will need in order to serve. If there is enough time before you report date, a new summons will be mailed to you. If you do not have your summons on your report date, a staff member of jury services will re-print one the morning you are required to report. Please arrive early so this does not delay court proceedings.
