Overview
The general principles of pavement markings have definite and important functions to perform in a proper scheme of traffic control. In some cases, they are used to supplement the regulations or warnings of other devices such as traffic signs or signals. In other instances, they are used alone and produce results that cannot be obtained by the use of any other device.
Each standard marking shall be used only to convey the meaning prescribed for it. Before any new highway, surfaced detour, or temporary route is opened to traffic, all necessary markings should be in place. The most common method of placing pavement, curb, and object markings is by means of paint.
