The alignment on the connector segment from Greene Street to Reynolds Street encroached on the Springfield Historic District. The Springfield Community was established in the late 1700's and has long been an important location for African-American culture and history in Augusta. The Federal Highway Administration, National Historic Preservation Office, State Historic Preservation Office and GDOT deemed this site to be eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Mitigation of the archaeological site has been completed and the findings of the artifacts and other historical information have been documented on the web sites listed below.
On September 15, 2009 the City Commission approved an Agenda Item for the purpose of adding these links to the City's web site. The intent of providing this information is to educate our community and acknowledge the importance of preserving Augusta's history.
