Possible Initiatives
In Support of Core MVAC Functions
Function: To serve as an advisory body to the Mayor on matters pertaining
to the military in Augusta.
- Coordinate a partnership between Ft. Gordon’s School of Information
Technology and Augusta State University establishing degree-producing programs
in computer science and computer engineering.
- Establish liaison between the city government and Ft. Gordon’s
protocol office to coordinate courtesy visits with the Mayor by military
dignitaries on military business to the installation.
- Provide summary information regarding recent and future Fort Gordon
retirees to assist the Mayor and appropriate organizations in hiring
retirees and marketing our area and its retiree capabilities.
- Provide advice on key issues and DOD influencers/decision makers to ensure
that
- maximum political power is applied in support of Fort Gordon and Eisenhower
- Army Medical Center.
- Identify core issues and concerns of the military in Augusta, and prepare
a page of
- Talking Points on each, for the Mayor’s use in discussions and
meetings with
- citizens and community leaders.
Function: To increase the Mayor’s visibility as a friend to
the military.
- Urge the Commanding General to offer an invitation to the Mayor to attend
a post retirement ceremony as a personal guest.
- Arrange for the Mayor to distribute letters from Richmond County elementary
school children to veterans hospitalized in the VAMC on Veteran’s
Day and Eisenhower Army Medical Center on Armed Forces Day.
- Ensure that the Fort Gordon and EAMC Employees-of-the-Month/Year,
NCOs-of-the-Month/Year, and Soldiers-of-the-Month/Year are recognized
by the Office of the Mayor.
- Assist the Mayor in arranging an appropriate professional meeting with
the cadets of the ASU ROTC department. The Mayor could talk to the cadets
about
- leadership and its application to life and community living, or other
matters of interest.
- Establish a Cadet of the Quarter program, for the Mayor to recognize
outstanding local ROTC and JROTC students.
Function: To improve the quality of life for military personnel
and their families in Augusta.
- Assist in bringing the VA-supported cemetery to Fort
Gordon.
- Help increase military discounts at local retail stores.
- Assist in setting up military and civilian leader lunches at Fort Gordon
and at local meeting places.
- Arrange for the Mayor to meet with representatives of Fort Gordon’s
family housing areas, to discuss matters of concern to Augusta’s
military families and identify possible initiatives.
- Coordinate a meeting between the Mayor and representatives of local
veterans groups, to discuss matters of concern and identify possible initiatives.
- Assist the Mayor and the Chamber of Commerce in marketing the CSRA
to prospective technology-oriented companies that require a trained pool
of technologists and executives that are retiring or leaving the Army
