Mayor's Welcome
Augusta Welcomes Visitors & Residents
It is a pleasure for me to welcome you to the Augusta-Richmond County website. As you’ve taken the opportunity to take an online look into our great City, I wanted to take a moment to share with you just a few of the things that make me proud to call Augusta home.
Having been elected mayor in December of 2005, I have been fortunate to be a part of a progressive change that has helped set us on course towards a bright and prosperous future. In the past three years alone, we have created over three thousand new jobs while at the same time committing $37.5 million to the redevelopment of our historic inner city neighborhoods. Our city center, located on the banks of the mighty Savannah River, has begun a resurgence with loft apartments, local restaurants and eclectic shops all drawing the attention of residents and visitors alike.
We are home to the Masters Golf Tournament, the yearly Westobou Arts Festival, and the legendary Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown. Our deep and talented labor force, along with the Army Signal Center calling our own Fort Gordon home, has helped us to attract new businesses such as Automated Data Processing, T-Mobile, and Teleperformance while at the same time providing a workforce for companies such as Proctor and Gamble, Kellogg’s, E-Z Go, and others.
Outdoor recreational opportunities provided by the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, the Savannah River, the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, and Lake Strom Thurmond help accentuate our commitment to maintaining a quality of life that is second to none. Augusta boasts one of the finest medical communities in the Southeast as the home to eleven hospitals as well as the Medical College of Georgia. Our institutions of higher learning, including Augusta State University, Augusta Technical College, Phoenix University, and Paine College, offer educational opportunities not only for our young people, but also for adults.
As you can see, Augusta has a lot to offer both visitors and residents alike. Whether you’re a new friend looking to relocate your family or your business or a resident researching all our city has to offer, I welcome your interest in Augusta!
Sincerely,
Deke Copenhaver
