STEPS TO PREPARE FOR DRINKING WATER EMERGENCIES

Contact: EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791

As much of the East Coast prepares for potential emergencies related to hurricane Isabel's landfall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would like to remind everyone of steps you can take to provide your family with a clean, fresh supply of drinking water available during emergencies.

You should have at least a three ga1lon supply of water per person. Typically, this would be enough water for three days. Water should be stored in thoroughly washed plastic, glass, fiberglass or enamel-lined metal containers. Soft drink bottles, for instance, work very well. The containers should be tightly sealed, labeled and stored in a cool, dark place. Under these conditions, water can be stored for six months.

If you do not have stored water and there is an emergency, you can use the water in your hot-water tank, pipes and ice cubes. The water in the reservoir tank of your toilet (not the bowl) can also be used as a last resort. Please visit the following Web sites for more information, including where to find water outside your home, ways to purify water and other steps you can take to prepare for natural disasters. For more information, please contact EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 or 703-285-1093. You can also contact the hotline via e-mail at: hotline-sdwa@epa.gov.

Automated Meter Readers Installed in Augusta

This summer as part of Benchmark 2010, a program designed to bring the best possible services to our customers, the Augusta Utilities Department will start installing a new Automated Meter Reading system (AMR) that will eventually do away with estimated billings and eliminate the need for a meter reader to come to your building to read the meter.

Starting in July, AMR will be installed for approximately 7,000 Augusta Utilities Customers. AMR will provide the most accurate reading of water usage without the meter reader having to enter private property. The system will be set up so the usage can be read from the street by a handheld device or a special computer inside the meter readers’ vehicle.

Commercial customers are the primary targets in this first phase of installation. Of the new meters to be installed over the next six months, approximately 1,000 will be residential meters that currently exist in areas heavily saturated with commercial and industrial meters.

Augusta Utilities customers receiving the new technology will be notified by mail with a letter explaining the process and will be asked to call a specific number to set up an appointment to install the new meter. This number will actually be a direct line to the company selected to install these meters on behalf of the Utilities Department. In addition, if attempts to make appointments are unsuccessful, these installers will be visiting homes and businesses on behalf of Augusta Utilities requesting to change the water meters. The certified installers will have a picture ID, uniforms, and will be driving clearly marked vehicles. Standard installation should take less than an hour and there will be a brief interruption of water service. There will be no cost to the customer to install the new meters.

Honeywell, Inc. is the prime contractor for the project. Honeywell will provide
project management services for the installation of Badger water meters equipped with
Itron mobile meter reading technology.

This innovative technology is similar to what is being used by progressive utility companies all over the United States. Customers may experience an initial increase in their water bill due to the improved accuracy associated with replacing older meters with newer, more accurate meters.
