Frequently Asked Questions

What number do I call if I have a water or sanitary sewer emergency?

Please call 842-3060. Our Dispatcher is here to answer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Who do I call about dirty water?

Please call 842-3060 to report dirty water. Dirty water is typically caused by a Contractor turning valves and redirecting the water to construct a tap or cut a line.

Who do I call about purchasing a water or sewer tap?

Please call 842-3050 and someone will transfer you to the appropriate office. Current tap fees are available on the Rates page.

Who do I call if I have questions about my water bill?

Please contact our Customer Service Department at 842-3050.

Who do I call about getting water and/or sanitary sewer extended to my property?

Please contact the Engineering Department at 842-3050 or 771-2648. The Engineering Department will determine the closest water and/or sewer lines available to serve your property. They will then coordinate with Construction & Maintenance to determine the cost involved with extending the line. A cost estimate will be provided for you if Augusta Utilities can extend the line with our own forces. If the line can not be extended using Augusta Utilities forces, you will need to contact a Contractor to construct the extension. Please call the Engineering Department for further information about our Extension Policy. Many water and sewer extensions are already planned for 2001 - 2005 in the Master Plan.

Who do I call about streets and storm drains?

The maintenance and upkeep of 1,071 miles of roads and streets, over 100 detention ponds, the levee, the canal, and all of the storm water drainage systems are all the responsibility of the Public Works Department's Maintenance Division. This Division is also responsible for paving dirt roads, resurfacing streets and parking lots, and small drainage projects. Augusta Utilities operates and maintains water and wastewater systems only.

Why is my water pressure low?

Your water pressure could be low for different reasons. One reason may be your location with respect to the water source. For example, if you live very close to an elevated storage tank, the service head at that location will be low if the hydraulic gradient is steep for that distribution line. Your water pressure may also be low if your meter is clogged. Utilities personnel can check to see if this is the problem and replace the meter. If you have very old pipes, water pressure will drop when old lead water pipes get clogged-up from calcium build-up and minerals. A plumber can replace your service line with copper type piping. The new copper piping will increase the water pressure for you.

How are capital improvement projects funded?

Capital improvement projects are those that improve our system, such as upgrades to the treatment plants, new water and/or sewer lines, new storage tanks, etc. All projects are funded by money we collect from water and sewer revenues. Augusta Utilities project funding differs from that of the Public Works Department whose funding for most of their construction projects comes from 1% Sales Tax dollars. This is the reason that Public Works holds Public Information Meetings.

What are Bond Projects?

Bond Projects are our capital improvement projects for which bond money has been allocated. In 1996, Augusta Utilities proposed a Revenue Bond Issue to implement a five year capital improvement program and refinance and consolidate the existing debt of the former City and County systems. The projects listed on the engineering page are just several of the remaining projects that were part of the 1996 Bond Issue.

Is bottled water safer than tap water?

According to the AWWA, the Federal Drug Administration oversees bottled water, but it is not subject to the same rigorous monitoring and testing as tap water. Please see our Annual Consumer Confidence Report (accessible through the Utilities Home Page or City web site) to see what's in your water.

How soon can I get my water turned on?

The Utilities Department offers same day service until 4 PM, after that time service will be turned on the next business day. 2-3 days notice is preferred.
