"Garden City" Concept
Augusta Georgia the "Garden City"
The "Garden City" nickname was coined in the 1920s when garden clubs in Sand Hills, the section of Augusta now known as The Hill, gave tours of private gardens to raise money. The Northern wealthy found the climate pleasant and the growing season longer. They built large estates on The Hill and in the rear of the properties were expansive gardens. Camellias and azaleas which could not grow up north flourished. Hence, Augusta became known as the "Garden City".
