Institution Profile

The current site of Richmond County Correctional Institution was constructed on November 23, 1963. The original site (Richmond County Prison) was at the current location of T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School. The institution is a work camp that supplements the city's work force with cost-effective labor by using inmate work details. Each year, the institution saves the city approximately 1.5 million dollars by the use of inmate labor.

The operating capacity is (350) Level II -(medium, minimum, trusty security) male inmates. This includes both state felons and county misdemeanors. Because the institution houses state inmates, the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures- (SOP's) are adhered to and are strongly enforced. All inmates are housed in dormitories, and they work on a variety of job assignments -(8) hours per day Monday- Friday. All work details are supervised by correctional officers and/or county employees. Prior to supervising these details, correctional officers must complete the Georgia Department of Correction's Basic Correctional Officer's Training, and county employees must complete the Georgia Department of Correction's Basic Security Officers Training. Some of the duties that the inmate work details perform includes but are not limited to: clear retention ponds, cut/clear ditches, right of ways, slopes, clear under bridges and guardrails, cut/clear road shoulders and creeks, pick up litter, cut lots, pick up property from evicted tenants, paint fire hydrants, maintain ball fields and recreational centers including offices, plant/prune trees, flowers, clean waste stations, erect/repair fences at Solid Waste Department, provide orderly/sanitation duties at the Augusta Diversion Center, ground maintenance, cook, laundry operation, barbering.
