Richmond County Transit
General Information
The Augusta-Richmond County Commission/Council and the Department of Transportation
began operating the Richmond County Transit System in September of 1989.
The areas served by this transportation system are called non-urban by the
Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT). By teaming together, the
federal, state and county can jointly finance the operation of an on-urban
program by implementing Section 5311 of the Federal Urban Mass Transportation
Act (UMTA). The Richmond Transit fleet consists of two (2) 14-passenger
vans, one (1) 8-passenger van (which is wheelchair capable), one (1) 21-passenger
bus, and one (1) 16-passenger van (which is wheelchair capable).

The transportation service area begins south of the Bobby Jones Expressway.
This area includes Hephzibah, McBean and Blythe.
Hours of Operation
Richmond County Transit Office hours are 8:30am – 5:30pm, and vans are in service from 6:00am – 3:45pm.
Making a Reservation
Reservations must be scheduled by calling 821-1497 before 2:00 p.m. the
day prior to appointment date. Appointments may be called in up to a week
in advance.
Fee Information
Tickets may be purchased by calling the Office. Each ticket costs $2.00 and is good for a one way trip fare. The fee for transportation is $2.00 one way per person for in-town trips.
All additional stops must be scheduled in advance by the Transit Supervisor
and will be $2.00 each.
Driver Responsibilities
The drivers for the Richmond County Transit System are to provide safe and
courteous service. They are not responsible for the physical assistance of
passengers. If physical assistance is needed, an escort will be required.
The driers are not permitted to enter homes. The transit patron must meet
the van outside the home or facility.
The drivers are not authorized to take appointments for any reason. The drivers
are authorized to refuse transportation to anyone who does not comply to the
rules of Richmond County Transit.
Richmond County Transit Rules
- All riders must pay one way fare ($2.00) or (1) ticket each time entering the van. Riders must have correct change or a ticket. Drivers are NOT allowed to make change. ALL riders must pay.
- All riders must wear seat belts. It is the law! Please remain buckled
until van come to a complete stop at your destination.
- All children ages 4 (four) and under must be in a car seat provided
by the parent or guardian.
- No food, drinks, tobacco produces, alcohol, controlled substances (drugs),
or profanity will be used on the vans.
- All riders must be properly dressed and practice proper hygiene so
that all riders have a pleasant experience.
- There will be no doubling back for forgotten personal items.
- It is the rider's responsibility to make appointments at least 24 (twenty-four)
hours in advance (before 2:00 p.m. the day prior). Complete and correct
directions for pick up will be required. Appointments are made on a first-come-first-served
basis.
- Only pre-scheduled appointments approved by the supervisor will be allowed.
Riders are not to change destinations once on the van. All changes must
be approved by the supervisor prior to the boarding of the van.
- Riders should be ready thirty (30) minutes before your scheduled appointment.
If the van must wait for five (5) minutes, it will leave without you.
This will count as a "no show".
- Riders must call to cancel an appointment prior to the pick up time
or this will be considered a "no show".
- Richmond County Transit reserves the right to suspend or discontinue
service to riders with three (3) "no shows".
- Riders must be ambulatory, that means they must be physically able to
enter and exit the transit vehicle on their own or bring an escort to
help them. We currently have two (2) wheelchair van available for use.
The driver will meet the wheelchair rider at the van, operate the wheelchair
lift and lock down the wheelchair. The driver is not permitted to go
inside a rider's home, store, medical facility, etc., with the rider.
- Under no circumstances will any rider or relative of passenger be allowed
to be abusive on the van. The result will be discontinued service for
that person.
- Any complaints concerning the Transit system must be submitted in writing
within twenty-four (24) hours of the incident.
- Richmond County Transit allows all riders (2) trips on/off the van to load/unload their packages. Riders can bring onto the van what they can carry on themselves in (2) trips and fit in their personal space on the van, which is their seating area, lap, and the floor directly in front of them.
Violation of Transit rules and regulations will result in the suspension
or termination of riding privileges.
