Local Historic Property / District Designation Process

Purpose

To recognize and protect individual properties and groups of properties (districts) with architectural and historical significance.

Eligibility

Properties eligible for designation include those that have historic, cultural or architectural value to the city and region. Properties or districts already listed on the National Register or Georgia Register are presumed to meet the criteria for local designation.

Application

Applications for designation may be submitted by a property owner or group of owners, preservation organization, historical society, or neighborhood association. Application forms are available from the Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission, 525 Telfair Street, Augusta, GA 30901 (Phone: 821-1796). The Planning Commission provides staff services to the Historic Preservation Commission.

Already Designated

Six (6) individual properties and three (3) districts have already been designated under the ordinance. The three districts are Downtown (IMAGE), Bethlehem (IMAGE), and Summerville (IMAGE).

Designation Process

The basic steps in the designation process are:

  1. Application for Designation filed with Historic Preservation Commission
  2. Historic Preservation Commission prepares report on the proposed designation
  3. Historic Preservation Commission notifies affected property owner(s) and residents of public meeting on the proposed designation
  4. Historic Preservation Commission holds public meeting on the proposed designation
  5. Historic Preservation Commission transmits recommendation on designation to the Augusta Commission
  6. Augusta Commission votes on proposed designation
  7. Historic Preservation Commission notifies affected property owners and residents of designation approval
