The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for providing inspection services to the city of Augusta . These services include:

Pre-construction site plan review
Construction final inspections
Fire Code Enforcement
Perform inspections for fire code compliance
Issue violations notices where appropriate
Conduct re-inspection
Handle citizens complaints regarding fire safety hazards

Code Enforcement

The Fire Prevention Bureau enforces applicable provisions of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Life Safety Code, International Fire Code, International Building Code, and the city of Augusta Code of Ordinances for the public.

The Bureau conducts annual fire inspections on commercial buildings to assure the building meet all requirements of national, state, and local codes.

Plan Review

The Bureau also reviews all new and existing building plans for construction services. All plans are examine to assure that they meet all requirements of national, state, and local code. Once the plans are reviewed and the construction site is inspected, fire system tested and approved, a certificate of occupancy is issued.

Fire Investigation

The Fire Investigator handles all investigations of suspicious and arson fires within the city of Augusta .

The Fire Investigator responds to incidents involving:

Fire believed to be intentionally set
Fires involving juveniles
Fires involving fatality
Fires involving high dollar loss
Acts of terrorism (i.e. fire bombing, structural sabotage)
Hazardous Condition of an occupancy representing an immediate threat to life safety (i.e. assembly overcrowding, blocked exits, building collapse, compromised fire protection and detection systems, etc)
Other related hazards and/or fires requested by the on-scene incident commander

The primary responsibilities of the fire investigator are to determine the origin and cause of a fire scene set forth in NFPA 921.

Fire Safety Education

The Fire Safety Education provides safety information and education programs in a variety of areas to include: exit drills, smoke detectors, fire facts, fire safety house, and much more.

How do I request a fire inspection?

Request 24-48 hours in advance by calling (706) 821-2929.

Is there any cost associated with a fire inspection?

No cost for inspections.

Does the Fire Department do residential construction inspections?

How do I submit commercial construction plans and how does the plan review process work?

3 sets of plans are submitted to License & Inspections Department, L& I then forward a copy to the Fire Department for review and approval. Once plans are approved then a construction permit is issued. An 80% and 100% inspection is required. After the 100% inspection, a certificate of occupancy is issued for a fee of $100.00

What about construction permit fees?

$100.00 for first 10,000 sq ft, then 1 ½ cents for every sq ft thereafter.

What is the fee for a certificate of occupancy and how long is it good for?

The fee is $100.00 and is good for the life of the building, if the occupancy does not change.

What system testing does the Fire Department witness?

Sprinkler systems, alarm systems, fire pump, and underground piping.

How many sprinkler plans and alarm plans do I need to submit?

Submit 3 sets of sprinkler plans to the Fire Department. After review and approval, one set stay with the Fire Department, one set goes to the License and Inspections Department, and one set goes to the job site.
Submit 1 set of alarm plans to the Fire Department.
