Richmond County Citizens Volunteer for Disaster Training

"Community Emergency Response Teams" (CERT) Give Critical Support to First Responders During Emergencies"

The Richmond County Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with other local emergency response agencies, will continue training citizens to assist first responders during emergencies and disasters. The training will be for volunteers age 18 and older. The classes will run consecutively for nine weeks at a location to be announced.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program trains people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their neighborhoods. When emergencies occur, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community. With citizens better prepared to take care of themselves and their neighbors during a crisis, public safety officials will be able to focus their attention on the most critical, life threatening situations.

The training will be conducted by specialists from Richmond County EMA, Augusta Fire Department, Rural Metro EMS, Richmond County Sheriff's Office, and the Augusta Chapter of the American Red Cross. The training will include disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, light search and rescue operations, disaster psychology, and a disaster simulation.

The Richmond County CERT program is one of only ten such programs in the State of Georgia and is part of a national volunteerism effort initiated by President Bush after the September 11, 2001 attack. The CERT program is expected to train over 400,000 individuals in the United States over the next two years. Richmond County's goal is to train a minimum of 100 citizens each year on an on-going basis.

To learn more about CERT, or to reserve a seat in the training class, residents of Augusta-Richmond County should call the EMA office at 821-1155 or e-mail Sharon Bennett.
