Swim Lesson Guidelines
Prices: $40.00 for Richmond County Residents, $45.00 for Non-Richmond County Residents
Orientation: Regardless of which class your child is registered for, the first day of class is designated for facility rules and skills testing.
Swim Apparel: All swim lesson students are required to wear swimsuits. Cut-offs, body suits or street clothes are not allowed. Students must provide their own clean, dry towels. Swim caps are optional; however if hair length is past the shoulder, a rubber-band is suggested. Swim caps are recommended for swimmers with potential ear problems.
Attendance and Conduct: Attendance is vital to the success of your child’s learning experience and progression through the program. Important skill development and safety skills are covered in each class; therefore, make-ups are not allowed for missed classes. If a child is unwilling to participate in the lessons, we may recommend that they attend another class at a lower level.
Helpful Tips for Parents: Some swimmers may be anxious about their new experience. You are their biggest fans and best encouragers. To build the relationship between your child and their swim instructor, we encourage the parent to sit on the bleachers beside the pool and not interrupt the class. It is important that all pre-school parents remain at the pool during their children’s lessons time to assist with their personal needs. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s instructor following the class. We will maintain a 5-7 child per instructor ratio for all lessons. Please arrive at least five minutes before the start of class and guide your child through the shower in the locker room and onto the deck area. To save time, you may opt to have your child wear his/her suit to the pool and bring clothes to change into following class.
Young Swimmers/Tots/Diapers: Children who are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers and tight fitting plastic pants with waistband and leg. For public health reasons, no regular diapers are allowed in the pool. Swim diapers are available for purchase at the front desk for $1.50 each.
Health Conditions: If your child has any type of medical, physical concerns or limitations that need to be addressed (e.g., asthma, limited joint movement or seizures), please provide this information to the instructor prior to class.
Description of classes:
All classes are based on the American Red Cross’ learn-to-swim program. Each course combines skills and instruction in safety and swimming. Students are recommended to proceed level by level to pick up the skills most efficiently.
Parent & Children Aquatics (Water babies & bugs) - This course provides instruction for both parent and child. These courses provide instruction on support and holding techniques, selecting and using lifejackets, water adjustment, changing positions, breath control, water entry and exit, and basic skills for swimming on front and back. This class is designed for students 6 months to 2 years old.
Level 1 (Puddle Jumpers) - The objective of level 1 is to help students feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. This level touches on elementary aquatics skills such as bubble blowing, submersion, floating and treading water; these are skills in which the students will build on as they progress through the upper levels.
Level 2 (Starfish) - Students will work on fundamental aquatic skills, including learning to float without support as well as additional locomotion skills. Students will explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions, which provides a strong basis for future strokes.
Level 3 (Sea Turtles) - Students will learn to swim on their own for short distances. Students practice front and back crawl as well as some elements of butterfly and breaststroke. This class also begins experimentation with treading water and begins working on rotary breathing (to the side instead of picking whole head up).
Level 4 (Seals) - The objective of level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes students have learned so far to improve on their aquatic skills. Students increase their endurance in front and back crawl as well as building on their skills for butterfly and breaststroke. Elements of sidestroke and elementary backstroke are also brought in at this level.
Adult Lessons - This level of class are customized to meet the goals and needs of individual participants, who are generally at the beginner stage.
