Adoption Information
Thank you for your interest in our pets.
The animals that we put up for adoption are given a basic behavioral assessment and tested for food and dog aggression. Please know, that since most of our animals are strays, we can not guarantee the disposition of a dog or cat.
Included in the fee (see pricing schedule below) is the animals sterilization (spay or neuter), rabies vaccination and adoption fee. The dogs receive a parvo/distemper combination and kennel cough vaccination. They are also given a de-worming medication. If old enough, the animal is tested for heart worms. The cats receive a de-wormer and a feline distemper combination. The animal is not sterilized before you leave the shelter. We have a list of 21 local vets who will accept your receipt for the rabies vaccination and sterilization. If you live outside of Richmond County, please note, that your fee will still be the same. If you choose not to have the animal altered at one of the veterinarians on our list, you will pay for the sterilization out of your own pocket, essentially paying for it twice. Also, fees such as medication and pre or post anesthetic drugs are not included in the money you pay at the time of the adoption. There are always exceptions! Once the animal has received the rabies vaccination you must return proof to shelter. Also, once the animal has been sterilized a copy of the sterilization certificate must also be returned to the shelter.
State and local laws mandate the sterilization of any cat or dog adopted from an animal shelter, humane society, or rescue group in the state of Georgia. Please note that the penalty for not returning these forms is a maximum of a $1,000 fine and/or jail time.
Once the animal has received the rabies vaccination and has been sterilized, you do not have to use the vets on our list for future care. You may go to any veterinarian that you choose. The veterinarians on our list are supplied to you, to offer a low-cost sterilization.
We are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 12:45-4:45 pm. We stop doing adoptions at 4:45 since there is paper work involved and the shelter must close promptly at 5:00 pm. Thank you for understanding!
