About Daniel Field

The Daniel Field Airport is owned and operated by the city of Augusta. The city purchased the land for the airport in July, 1927, and opened the field as an airport on October 29, 1927. The airport was named for the mayor, Raleigh H. Daniel. Daniel Field served as Augusta’s commercial airport until 1952 when airline service moved to Bush Field. Daniel Field was used as an Army Air Base during World War II. Today Daniel Field is part of Augusta’s airport system, serving the general aviation community.

The political body overseeing the operation of Daniel Field is the General Aviation Commission (GAC). The GAC consists of ten members appointed by the Augusta Richmond County Commission and two members appointed by the Richmond County legislative delegation. The GAC employs a full time airport manager. The GAC meets on the third Monday of each month. Meetings are open to the public.

Daniel Field has two asphalt runways with parallel taxiways. Both runways are equipped with runway lights. The airport has a rotating beacon, lighted wind indicator, and automated weather reporting facilities (ASOS). The airport has non-precision instrument approaches using VOR, NDB, and ASR facilities.

The Daniel Field terminal area has bathrooms, telephones, flight planning area, pilots lounge, and conference room. A restaurant is located on the airport with its own aircraft parking apron.

Augusta Aviation Inc. is the fixed base operator (FBO) at Daniel Field. Services that Augusta Aviation provides include fuel sales, aircraft repair, hangar rental, tie down area, flight instruction, aircraft rental, and charter service.

Daniel Field is home to more than 70 aircraft including many corporate aircraft, private aircraft used for both business and recreation, and the Augusta Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. Due to the airport’s proximity to Augusta’s medical facilities, air ambulance and medical transport aircraft use Daniel Field on an almost daily basis. Daniel Field has over 27,500 operations a year.

More than 50 people are employed at Daniel Field with annual wages of over $900,000. The city of Augusta collected more than $120,000 in property tax on aircraft based at Daniel Field. From 1996 to 1999, $305,000 in sales tax was collected at Daniel Field. The Georgia Department of Transportation, in a 1995 study, estimated the economic impact of the airport to the Augusta area at 3.1 million dollars.
