The City of Augusta began a "Living Green" Initiative in 2011, resulting in efforts within the city government to increase awareness of recycling, sustainability, and other green concepts. The city sponsored its first official "Living Green Day" in March 2012. The first event was held in an urban setting, the beautiful Augusta Common in downtown Augusta. Likewise, the 2nd event was held on the Common in 2013, with more activities and community interest.
In 2014, the city partnered with the Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy (SNSA) and Georgia Regents University (GRU) in order to encourage a unified community effort that would be able to capitalize on having greater resources available to sponsor a celebration that would show the area's growing spirit of environmental responsibility.
2014's event was held at the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, the headquarters of the SNSA and one of Augusta's most beautiful but untapped resources. The 2014 event is commemorated on a separate page (available by clicking here).
