(Augusta – August 8, 2008) The Community Agenda component of the updated Augusta-Richmond County Comprehensive Plan is now available for review. The Community Agenda includes a summary of the community participation process; the final list of community issues and opportunities identified by residents and stakeholders for future action, the overall vision for the future development of the city, expressed in the form of a Future Development Map indicating unique character areas, each with its own strategy for guiding future development patterns; and an implementation program that will help the community realize its vision for the future and address the identified issues and opportunities.
The Future Development Map actually consists of three maps: the Final Character Area Map, the Future Development Patterns Map and the Natural and Cultural Resources Map. Three maps are necessary in order to clearly convey information on future development patterns, account for the resources that need protection and identify the other areas requiring special attention.
The Community Agenda and Future Development Map are available on the project website or by contacting the Planning Commission by phone, fax or e-mail.

The SR-56 (Mike Padgett Highway) proposed improvements consist of widening and reconstructing SR-56 to include a raised center median and shoulder improvements for a distance of approximately 4.5 miles from Bennock Mill Rd to Old Waynesboro Rd in Richmond County. The proposed project also involves signal timing, shoulder, and drainage improvements between Old Waynesboro Rd to the project terminus approaching Tobacco Rd.
I-20 / I-520 Widening and Interchange Reconstruction Project
This $192 million road improvement project started in June 2007 and is expected to take approximately three years to complete. The project consists of 6.25 miles of widening for additional lanes along I-20, the addition of collector-distributor lanes along parts of I-520 (Bobby Jones Expressway) and I-20, and the reconstruction of the I-20 / I-520 interchange, including the addition of two flyover ramps, and a grade-separated interchange at Scott Nixon Memorial Drive and I-520. For additional background information on the project, work zone safety tips, project contacts and the latest updates on the project, to go to the Georgia Department of Transportation website.
