Augusta serves as the center of a growing metropolitan region of 520,700 populations in east central Georgia and west central South Carolina (Source: Woods & Poole Economics, Inc.). Augusta strives to support economic development by seeking new industry and trade, facilitating expansion and retention of existing businesses, and making special efforts in distressed business districts.
Economic development in Augusta is a team effort. The team is made up of the following players:
Augusta Housing & Community Department
The mission of the Augusta Richmond County Housing & Community Department is to create positive change by promoting self-sufficiency through partnership in economic development, quality housing and neighborhood reinvestment.
The department administers the federally-funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnership, Emergency Shelter Grant and Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) programs. The department also administers an Economic Development Loan Fund. The purpose of the loan fund is to finance development projects, establish new businesses and/or expand existing businesses. The funds must create or retain jobs for low and moderate-income persons.

Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce
The Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce has as its mission promotion of the location, development, and expansion of new and existing businesses. The Chamber performs a variety of services related to economic development in addition to these promotional activities.

Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission
The Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission is responsible for the planning function in the Augusta Government. The Planning Commission does comprehensive planning, transportation planning, administration of the local development review process, zoning, site plan and subdivision regulations, and a variety of other things related to economic development.

Augusta Tomorrow’s Mission is “to serve the community at large by planning, promoting, and implementing the development of Augusta with particular emphasis on the city center.” As a private corporation with representation from the City of Augusta and the City of North Augusta, the Augusta Tomorrow board identifies development and redevelopment needs particularly in the city center, seeks developers and actively works with the developers and the public sector to implement the projects. Since 1982, Augusta Tomorrow has developed public private partnerships with the City of Augusta that led to accomplishments such as developing Master Plans for Augusta’s downtown, development of the award-winning Riverwalk, the Augusta Common (the city center’s park), Augusta Riverfront Center (includes the Riverfront Hotel & Convention Center and the Riverfront Office Center), and the St. Sebastian Way road project.
Augusta Tomorrow, Inc. considers downtown planning crucial to development. In conjunction with the Augusta Master Plans, Augusta Tomorrow, Inc. has printed Master Plan Maps and map updates since the 1990s. The Most recent Master Plan and Master Plan Map are on the Augusta Tomorrow web site. Augusta Tomorrow’s interactive website provides developers the ability to zoom-in on a block or a building and see current and proposed development.

Development Authority of Richmond County
The Development Authority of Richmond County (DARC) is responsible for the recruitment of new business in the area of industry, manufacturing, distribution, corporate and regional headquarters, customer service centers, and assistance with other major economic development projects in the area. The DARC also focuses on the existing industries of Augusta Richmond County to insure their continuing expansion and retention.
